This legislation erects new barriers for eligible voters by imposing strict documentation requirements.

WASHINGTON — Last night, the U.S. House of Representatives advanced the anti-voter “SAVE America Act,” pushing the sweeping show-your-papers measure closer to becoming federal law. This bill is the attempt to revive the hugely unpopular SAVE Act, which was stopped last year by massive public opposition across the country.  Fair Elections Center calls on the Senate to halt this legislation and uphold its responsibility to safeguard free and fair access to the ballot for every eligible citizen nationwide.

As the bill advances to the Senate, Fair Elections Center President and CEO Rebekah Caruthers released the following statement:

“The SAVE Act in any form would prevent millions of citizens from voting. If passed, this bill would make voting especially hard for communities of color, low-income people, people with disabilities, women, rural Americans, and other marginalized communities. We should all have an equal chance to choose our representatives, but this bill would mean only some citizens would be counted in making those choices. The Senate must defend our freedom to vote and reject this legislation.”
