Fair Elections Center condemns the administration’s latest attempts to sow election distrust and push policies that would block millions from the ballot box.

WASHINGTON — Last night, President Trump used the State of the Union address to renew calls for strict proof‑of‑citizenship requirements, new voter ID rules, and major limits on mail voting, despite repeated findings by state and local officials that U.S. elections remain secure. In response, Fair Elections Center President and CEO Rebekah Caruthers released the following statement:

“Last night, the President doubled down on a manufactured crisis to justify the worst voting laws  in modern history. The SAVE America Act would stop millions of eligible Americans from voting by forcing them to show paperwork many do not have or cannot easily access, override state election systems that already work, and gut the mail‑in voting options that keep our democracy accessible. These proposals are built on conspiracy theories—claims repeatedly disproven by election officials and independent fact‑checkers—and they would silence far more legitimate voters than they would ever ‘save.’ Our democracy doesn’t need new barriers. It needs leaders who trust the people, not fear their participation.”

The Fair Elections Center will continue working with partners, advocates, and election officials to ensure that voters have the information, access, and protections they need. Our mission remains clear: safeguarding the freedom to vote and supporting election systems that reflect the will of the people.
