In response to yesterday’s executive order aimed at reshaping US elections, Robert Brandon, President and Founder of Fair Elections Center, released the following statement:
“This executive order to reshape our electoral system is rooted in falsehoods and guided by a willful ignorance of how our elections work. The Constitution explicitly gives the states and Congress the authority to set the rules for elections.
The Trump administration’s action is at odds with our country’s democratic values and endangers the right to vote for millions of eligible Americans, including students and other first time voters, military voters stationed overseas, the elderly and disabled, naturalized citizens, and those in rural communities. These proposed actions are not only illegal, they would also lead to millions of eligible citizens losing access to the ballot.
Our elections are safe and secure without these purported new rules and procedures, and we encourage our elected representatives to pass laws to ensure that every citizen, regardless of background, where they live or their wealth, has equal access to the ballot.”
