Fair Elections Center has released a statement by Policy Director and Senior Counsel Michelle Kanter Cohen on the Michigan Voting Rights Act:

Fair Elections Center is deeply disappointed in the failure of Michigan legislators to prioritize and pass the Michigan Voting Rights Act (MIVRA). Every voter in our democracy should have the same opportunity to participate free from discrimination. The MIVRA would have provided protections from discrimination in voting that are no longer in place because of Congress’s ongoing failure to update the national Voting Rights Act. It would also have expanded language accessibility in Michigan elections so that no matter where a voter comes from or the language they speak, they have a voice in our democracy. We will continue to fight for these protections in Michigan and across the country so that every citizen has the same opportunity and freedom to vote.
