Position Description:

Fair Elections Center is seeking a Virginia State Lead. The State Lead is a key member of the team. The State Lead is tasked with supporting and strengthening civic engagement efforts at Higher Education Institutions through relationship management, student engagement, and program coordination. They serve as supervisor to Democracy Fellows and coordinate with campus administration and faculty, helping students organize civic engagement programming such as voter registration, voter education, and voter turnout activities. 

This role is focused on supporting civic engagement programming during the 2026 election  cycle and assisting campuses with voter engagement initiatives through the end of the calendar  year. The State Lead will report directly to a Regional Manager. 

This is a temporary position expected to run through December 31, 2026, with the possibility of  extension based on organizational needs. 

Goals of the Position

  • Support and coordinate state-level programming, including implementation, partner communication, and event coordination.
  • Serve as a point of contact for partner institutions and campus administrators during the term of employment.
  • Engage campuses at an institutional level to help create nonpartisan democratic engagement programs that promote voter registration, voter education, voter turnout, and foster student leadership across the campus community.
  • Provide campus administrators, faculty, and student leadership with accurate nonpartisan information on the voting process and elections through training, materials, and one-on-one support.
  • Serve as point of contact and supervisor for Democracy Fellows, stipend student positions committed to planning and running democratic engagement programs on their campuses each semester.
  • Work with Democracy Fellows to create campus wide coalitions to facilitate nonpartisan civic engagement programs on campuses, including making CVP materials and resources available to campus coalition partners.
  • Participate in meetings and coordination efforts with the State Civic Engagement Table and related partners.
  • Support Voter Friendly Campus activities within the state, including campus outreach, reviewing of action plans and reports, and communication with the VFC Manager.
  • Support relationship-building and ongoing communication with community partners and statewide coalition partners dedicated to civic engagement.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • At least 1-2 years of experience in civic engagement, organizing, capacity building or similar program work.
  • Superior communication skills both written and oral.
  • Willingness to travel and access to reliable transportation as travel is required in order to attend events, partner convenings and campus visits across the state.
  • Experience engaging diverse constituencies and experience with institutions of higher education is a benefit.
  • Must reside in the state.

Location and Compensation:

The position is a remote full-time temporary position expected to run through December  31, 2026, with the possibility of extension based on organizational needs. Salary is $52,000/year with limited benefits including vacation and sick leave and cell phone and internet  stipends.
