In November 2025, the North Carolina State Board of Elections made the decision to compare North Carolina’s voter registration records with the Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements System (SAVE). On December 16, Fair Elections Center sent a letter to the board to inform them of recent changes made to the SAVE system that have introduced highly unreliable citizenship information to the system, as well as evidence from other states that use of the overhauled SAVE system has resulted in eligible voters having their citizenship wrongly questioned by state and local election officials. The letter urges North Carolina elections officials to be cautious when using the system’s data and ensure protections are in place to prevent wrongful removal of any eligible voters.
